Why Does Todd Ingram Have Super Powers?

Fun-Filled Friday View Comments

Jim here… Just a brief, fun post for the weekend… We just saw the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World a few days ago.  It’s a great movie, for many reasons. But, vegans will get a real kick out of one scene involving a character named Todd Ingram, who has super powers.  Why?  … Because he’s a vegan!  We won’t spoil the scene, though. But, if you’re a vegan, or know a lot of vegans, you should get a pretty good laugh from this! I think they nearly had to throw Wendi and me out of the theater, as we were laughing so hard (especially Wendi).  Enjoy. :-)

Fun-Filled Friday: Raw Hypnotism!

Fun-Filled Friday, Pure Jeevan Talks View Comments

Jim here… Yesterday I promised to hypnotize you, so here it is (below). This is something I published elsewhere long ago, slightly modified. Interestingly, in the original version, I’d made reference to various cooked food items — for example, describing the smell of fresh-baked muffins as comforting. Well, as pleasant as that smell may be to everyone, I just thought it would be odd to include it here on a blog devoted to raw foods.

I think, by the way, that next week I may post a piece on aroma and how it dovetails with raw foods. I’m sure there are interesting things to write about that topic. For now, I’ll simply point you to the funny hypnotism picture, below. While it characterizes hypnotism as a sort of mystical power wielded over another’s true will, that’s definitely not the case. As you’ll see, the text below is really just a very innocent, very calming, relaxing suggestion. Read it seriously and see if you aren’t relaxed and happy afterward. Have a great weekend!

Calm yourself … take a moment and simply breathe. … Breathe again, slowly, more deeply — consciously inhaling, and then slowly releasing. It feels good to breathe like this, doesn’t it?  Keep it up… repeating as you read. If there are distractions present, do your best to tune them out, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Soon you’ll notice that you’re beginning to relax, feeling more at ease than before … maybe you’re at work right now, surfing the web while you’re supposed to be working … but that’s okay because it feels good to read this and you deserve to take a moment and feel good … or you may be at home or somewhere else reading this — maybe in a sunlit cafe, perhaps sipping a warm mug of herbal tea, enjoying the rich aromas and the ambiance, the soothing music piped in from above, the other customers happily interacting … you may have other things to do today, but that’s okay because reading this and feeling the calm that I’m describing makes you feel good … and, though your body is feeling more and more relaxed as you read this, your mind is wide awake, your consciousness sharp … in fact, in this moment all of your cares and worries fade away …. see how relaxed you feel now? Isn’t it wonderful?!  As you continue reading this text, you’ll feel better and better — better than you’ve ever felt … in fact, you’re beginning to feel very happy …. that’s right, happy and euphoric! … at first, it’s just a small smile coming across your face … like a vivid happy memory from your childhood, or the remembrance of a dear friend … and then the happiness intensifies as you read every word of this post … the pleasant feeling washes over your body as though it were warm water or a fluffy comforter straight from the dryer … you smile fully now, so relaxed … those cares and worries from before so unimportant now as you simply enjoy this moment’s peace … it’s just like being in a sunbeam, isn’t it? … so relaxed, warm, carefree, and comfortable … thanks for joining me here … our time is nearly up now, but you’re not sad … instead, you know that this happy feeling will stay with you throughout the day and, in the future, if you’re feeling sad or anxious, all you need to do is return to this post and experience the bliss once again. When I count to three, you will leave this post, and maybe this blog … perhaps you will comment, perhaps you won’t … that doesn’t matter, anyway … what matters is that you will finish reading this feeling better than ever, completely refreshed and ready to attend to the rest of your day. One … two … three. Have a nice day!

Fun-Filled Friday: Fooled by Cacao!

Fun-Filled Friday View Comments

Hey everyone!  Just one long weekend left for Wendi and KDcat to (frantically) pack for their cross-country roadtrip. Yep, Monday night I’m dropping them on that midnight train to Portland. Wait until you see the spread of trip-snacks they’re taking along. (We took some pictures of the raw foods smorgasbord sent by our generous snack sponsor, Natural Zing).

Today, since it’s fun-filled Friday, I thought I’d share a little tale of frustration (although meant in kind of a funny way) relating to my own diet. You may have read my mini-manifesto a few weeks ago about my recent quest for simplicity. Well, Wendi and I have both largely maintained that kind of existence for a while now — especially when it comes to the breakfast smoothies (pineapples galore!) and lunch salads. I have to admit that my energy seems to be trending upward very nicely!

Yesterday, we went out to shop for some more supplies for Wendi and KDcat’s upcoming trek. I honestly felt supercharged the whole time — just bounding around the Target store (which we jokingly pronounce “tar-zhay”) without a care in the world. I even remarked on the way home, “Wow, I’m in such a great mood!” I attributed it all to the simplicity of my diet, thinking that it had really kicked in, so to speak, somehow optimizing the chemistry of my body.

Later, when we returned home, I realized the truth:  I’d been eating cacao earlier that day — after an extended period (perhaps a month or more) without it. I’d forgotten that I’d picked up a bag of raw cacao treats at our local co-op and had downed most of the bag that afternoon.

In a way, this was a huge let-down for me! Turns out I wasn’t naturally elated at all; I was just under the influence of endorphins. Ha! … But what were the implications? Was the only hope for my ultimate happiness dependent on “drugs” such as cacao? Could I ever find true happiness and contentment via a diet of normal, simple raw foods? Is cacao evil? Is it just a delicious, delirium-inducing drug? Is consuming it tantamount to “cheating” your way to happiness?  Blast you, you bliss chemical, you surreptitious serotonin, you secret agent of enhanced neurotransmission!!! O the anandamide! … O the angst!

Sigh. … Well, we ARE chemical beings, after all. (And, I don’t mean to come off as anti-cacao here because I really do love the stuff!) If anything, the experience is a reminder of the delicate balance of our internal chemistry. I suspect there’s a tolerance effect with cacao (again, not suggesting that’s a bad thing). I think my body had purged its memory of cacao’s intoxicants, only to relive the high anew. Good clean fun, I suppose. I only wish I’d known at the time. It does beg the question, though: Does it matter why you’re happy?

Are You ‘Shred Up’ With Your Food? If Not, Maybe You *Should* Be!

Fun-Filled Friday, Side Dishes View Comments

It’s time for a little Phun Phriday Philosophy. (I hope you don’t mind a little levity as we end this glorious week?) It just occurred to me that philosophers and self-development gurus commonly admonish against ”attachments.” Isn’t that true? We’re attached to our egos, our possessions, our relationships. All attachments are bad, it is said. I believe one of the primary tenets (Noble Truths) of Buddhism centers on this very thing — that our attachments cause suffering.

Well, all of that may be food for thought. But, when it comes to food for your body, I’m here to tell you that attachments are GOOD – especially, when we’re talking about the shredder attachment for your food processor!  Oh, don’t lie to me, fellow raw foodie (or raw aspirant, as the case may be): You know you’ve neglected this wonderful tool, haven’t you? — relegated it to some unimportant place in the back of a kitchen drawer somewhere, right?! Well, it’s time to rediscover the shredder blade! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to reconnect with this delightful food processor attachment.

I started thinking about this when one reader, Gary (an archaeologist!), asked me if I might unearth (get it?) a decent raw applesauce recipe for him. I immediately thought of this attachment because, even though the recipe I thought of wasn’t a real saucy applesauce, it’s still a similar, highly tasty dish. Basically, all you need to do is:

  • core / deseed a couple of apples (if you have a few different kinds, that would be super)
  • chop them minimally, just enough to be able to feed them into the food processor
  • run them through the shredder blade
  • also run a couple of handfuls of walnuts through, for extra texture.

From here, you can get creative. Here are some things you can do with this mixture:

  • I would definitely recommend sprinkling some cinnamon and a little bit of salt into it, no matter what you do. (Also consider other “apple-pie” flavors like nutmeg, clove, and cardamom.)
  • You can spoon it into a bowl and (optionally) drizzle agave nectar (or a sweetener of your choice) over it (or process further with agave or some soft/soaked dates).
  • You can process all or some of it further using the standard S-blade — pulsing a few times to make it a bit mushier (more applesauce-like than just the shreds).
  • You can use this (appropriately spiced-up) as an apple pie filling — for example, using a raw date-almond blend or something similar for a crust.

This is just one great use of the shredder blade. We’ve posted many demos in the past that show us using this for salads, wraps, and more. Anyone else have a great use for the shredder attachment? Come on… who else is attached to this attachment?! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Jim's Entry Into the Vita-Mix Promotional Contest

Hi Everyone.  It’s Friday… Let’s have some fun!  For today’s blog entry, I thought I’d post my submission to the recent video contest held by the Vita-Mix company. They were looking for a new spokesperson, and offered a $10,000 prize for the best video. I didn’t make the final cut, but did have a good deal of fun making this short video. Hope you like it:

On this blog, I’ve featured smoothie recipes similar to the one shown in that video, so I won’t post a special recipe here. I really just needed a very easy, yet tasty, recipe for the purposes of the vid. But, simple smoothies like this are very delicious, so definitely try it!

Who Is the Sugar Witch???

Fun-Filled Friday, Pure Jeevan Talks View Comments

Yesterday, I posted a question on Facebook and was met with some wonderful responses. The question was essentially, “If you’re a trying to run a health-conscious household, and if you truly believe that most sugary candy is actually damaging to people’s health, then what should you give away to all of the little trick-or-treaters who visit on Halloween night?”

I got some great responses! Raisins, fruit leathers, glow sticks, etc.  Thanks to those responses, I went out and bought about 60 glow-stick bracelets (the kind that you snap and then they glow brightly for 6 horus or so). I think the kids will think these are neat, and will all want to wear them. I also picked up a bunch of small juice boxes with 100% juice in them. (They’re pasteurized, of course, but at least it’s not sugary junk.) So, between all of that, I think I’ll make it through the night without getting egged.

(I realize we have some readers not from the U.S.A., so I’ll explain that last part:  You see, Halloween is often accompanied by various bits of mischief carried out by local kids. I wouldn’t say it’s common, but it’s not unheard of for various houses to be pelted with eggs, or for trees to be adorned with toilet paper on such a night. Giving out “lame” treats could possibly put you on some adolescent’s ”to-do” list for midnight mischief. Again, it’s not like this is exactly common, but it does happen sometimes.)

Back when I was a kid, we did get the occasional pack of raisins during our trick-or-treating. But, we normally threw them out — not so much because they weren’t chocolate bars, but back then (as is still true today), there was always a “candy-fear” that permeated Halloween. Parents in general felt that, if something wasn’t factory-sealed, then the possibility that it had been tampered with was higher. (Naturally, newscasts always seemed to highlight the most awful stories imaginable, perpetuating this fear.) So, any homemade popcorn balls, cookies, raisins (even though they were boxed), etc., went straight into the trash. Aside from that, after a cursory look-see from mom and dad, we were free to indulge in the night’s bounty, usually to the point of a stomach ache.

While the overall health consciousness level is still painfully low in many parts of the world, I think it’s 10x higher than it was when I was a kid.  I can still remember, for example, my grandmother receiving her first microwave as a gift. She didn’t trust it, and it sat unused in her basement for years.Within 5-10 years of that, though, microwaves were ubiquitous, and no one questioned their safety for a long time — even though, intuitively, it’s kind of obvious that microwaved food is not healthy. So, here we are nearly a decade into the 2000s, and it turns out Grandma was right. (They’re still flying off the shelves at local Wal-Marts, of course, but I do think more people are leery than used to be.)

My point, though, was that with this increased health consciousness, I suspect a lot of parents are at least a little bothered by Halloween. On the one hand, you don’t want to take fun experiences away from your kids, but you also don’t want them to gorge on processed sugar. To invent a win-win scenario addressing this problem, Wendi came up with the “Sugar Witch” when KDcat was a wee youngster — and we carried this tradition on until she was much older. Here’s what we did:

On Halloween, KDcat would go off trick-or-treating with the other kids, as normal (chaperoned by yours truly, normally decked out in pirate attire). She’d have a huge blast doing this, usually returning home with a full pillowcase of candy. Because we usually held parties on Halloween, there were usually other kids at our home as well. So, they would usually spread their candy out on the kitchen floor, and sort through it all — trading some goodies with others, ripping into some things right away.  We didn’t totally cut her off, of course… She did have a little, and was allowed to keep some of her favorites. But, she happily bagged up the bulk of her score as an offering for “The Sugar Witch.”

You see, The Sugar Witch is Halloween’s answer to Santa Claus or The Easter Bunny. What you would do is have the child place the offering somewhere dark and private (in our case, the back yard). They would then need to wait for a while (an hour or so). During that time, the Sugar Witch would make her magical visit, replacing the offering with a bag full of healthy, fun treats, toys, and gifts. For example, the Sugar Witch who visited our home usually left things like fruit tapes, vegan carob candies, beanie babies, small toys, etc. To KDcat, it was always 10x more exciting than a bag of belly-ache inducing candy bars.

Sometimes, the Sugar Witch accidentally dropped my daughter’s bag of candy in my office at work the next day. VERY strange, eh?  Now, how do you suppose something like that happened?! (My coworkers didn’t seem to mind!)

Raw Halloween Costume Potluck Tomorrow!

Finally, I wanted to remind everyone about the Pure Jeevan Halloween Bash, to be held tomorrow evening at our home. If you’re a Pure Jeevan reader and would like to attend, please DO! Details here.

Fun-Filled Friday: Laughter

Fun-Filled Friday View Comments

In all of our discussion of immune-building lately, we remembered today that we left out one enormously important item that should be present in anyone’s “healing toolbox.” That item is, of course, laughter. What better time than a “Fun-Filled Friday” to celebrate the healing power of humor!

Years ago, we’d heard a remarkable story about a man who had cured himself of a terrible disease using laughter as his “medicine.” According to the story we heard, the man checked himself into a hotel and just watched Marx Brothers comedies for hours on end, and was eventually cured.

In searching for that story, we came across a retelling of it in article on Natural News, by Citizen Journalist Cindie Leonard, on the healing powers of laughter. The man was Norman Cousins.

Here’s a great quote from that Natural News piece on the healing power of laughter:

Solid scientific research demonstrates that laughter offers the following benefits:

    • Lowering blood pressure
    • Strengthening cardiovascular functions
    • Reducing stress hormones
    • Improving circulation
    • Increasing muscle flexion
    • Oxygenating the body by boosting the respiratory system
    • Boosting immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gammainterferon and B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies.
    • Triggering the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers
    • Producing a general sense of well-being.

So, what are you waiting for?  Enjoy some laughter right now!  We invite everyone to share a joke, a link to a funny YouTube clip, a link to a funny blog post, a suggestion for a funny movie — anything! (Let’s keep it reasonably clean, okay?!)

*      *      *

Oh, and by the way, tomorrow is the birthday of Yogi Ramesh, popularly known as the Laughing Yogi. Happy Birthday Yogi Ramesh!!  This man has literally lifted the spirits of millions of people through his work at the Universal Temple of Yoga and Inner Peace.  Wendi got to meet him in Sedona in 2008. As you can see in the picture below, they’re both laughing!!

Penni Shelton: Raw Food Community Builder and Supporter!

Fun-Filled Friday View Comments

We don’t always announce birthdays of friends and family here. But this particular individual is an integral part of the raw food community and we want you all to meet her!

Today is the birthday of the radiantly beautiful Penni Shelton! For those of you who don’t know Penni, she’s an incredible woman; she’s got a heart of gold and is filled with love and compassion. She has been a loving friend of Wendi and member of the Pure Jeevan family for a very long time.

Penni is an extremely active supporter of the raw food community. Many of you most likely already know this lovely woman from her blog, Real Food Tulsa. She has taken the community of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and transformed it into a Midwestern Raw Foods Mecca! This is one woman you want to get to know if you don’t already. She brings incredible light, love, and laughter into the lives of those she touches.

Happy Birthday, Penni! We love you so very much and wish you a life filled with love, laughter, health, wealth, and friendship!

p.s. We know we said that we would be posting an update on our kimchi experiment today. However, we have decided to post that on Monday instead since it isn’t cured enough just yet (it’s a bit cold here in Pittsburgh rigth now, so it’s taking a bit longer to ferment).

Learn How to Identify Pawpaws: Join Us on a Pawpaw Hunting Expedition!

Fun-Filled Friday, Pure Jeevan Talks, video View Comments

I knew right away that I would be filing this under our “Fun-filled Friday” bannner. Finding pawpaws is a huge treat! They’re surprisingly little-known, and also very surprisingly tropical in nature. Who would think that something this delicious and exotic-tasting would thrive in so much of the non-trpoical world?!  In this video, you’ll learn where to look for pawpaw groves, how to identify a pawpaw tree, and what pawpaws look and taste like.

We’d like to send out a huge thanks to our friends Melissa and Dave Sokulski of FoodUnderFoot.com, who happened across these pawpaw trees the other day and then invited us to join them last night to return to the location. Melissa actually found the trees by (quite unexpectedly) smelling them as she walked past them! If that’s not a case of nature literally calling out for to us to enjoy its fresh, nutritious, plentiful bounty, then we don’t know what is.

Thanks again also to the homeowner, Bob J. Builder, who graciously allowed us not only to film in his amazing pawpaw grove, but who also encouraged us to take home as much as we wanted (and we DID!). He only had a few mature trees, but the amount of fruit they produced was incredible. Even with all we took, we hardly dented the delicious crop. (We’ll surely take you up on your offer for us to return, Bob!)  Besides being very welcoming, Bob is a super guy with loads of entertaining stories to tell. We don’t know him very well, but can tell he’s the life of the party where ever he goes.

We also wanted to remark that this story illustrates in an interesting way the community and friendship-building aspect of healthy raw foods. Picture a group of strangers arriving on a doorstep to ask permission to film something in the guy’s yard. From there, we spent a good half-hour simply hanging out and chatting with him. Everyone had a ton of fun doing so, and Bob was actually grateful that we stopped by because he hadn’t known about pawpaws prior to our visit.

Anyone else have any pawpaw stories or knowledge to share? Let us know in the comments!

Fun-Filled Friday: Raw Musicians!

Fun-Filled Friday, Pure Jeevan Talks View Comments

Today we wanted to do something fun and a bit unusual. We raw foodies are a creative bunch, so we  thought, “Why not profile a handful of raw musicians?!” Sounded like an interesting project, as we’ve all heard of at least a few raw foodist musicians out there.  So, here are a dozen raw musicians to get you started – that’s right, FOURTEEN wonderful raw musicians!  (Since when does a dozen equal fourteen? Well, we figure that cooked foodies have their “baker’s dozen,” which everyone knows is thirteen. We figure: Why be outdone by the cooked food world, eh? So, we’re redefining things a bit!)

Anyway, some of these bands/musicians are internationally famous; others are names you may not have heard before. We asked some of our friends to suggest raw musicians for today’s post and we were surprised with the number of musicians mentioned! All those listed below are reportedly raw (or, in the case of whole bands, at least one or more of the members are raw foodists). Please note that this is by no means a complete list.

(Click on the pictures to visit their sites!)

We’ll start off with Jason Mraz, as his triple-platinum Billboard Top Ten tune I’m Yours has dominated the charts for quite some time. By the way, Jason’s Twitter feed (see yesterday’s blog post!) is here. True to his raw roots, you’ll note that his current tour is known as the “Gratitude Cafe” tour (surely a nod to the famous raw food destination Cafe Gratitude in San Francisco).  Mraz also reportedly owns his own avocado farm in southern California.

Next up is Bif Naked, which should immediately demonstrate that, while raw foodies seem to share some basic philosophies, the way they express those philosophies differs widely. Bif brings a much harder-edged sound, kind of the polar-opposite of Mraz. However, her energy is undeniable. (She’s on Twitter, too — here!). Bif has received quite a bit of attention of late in relation to her health. Many in the raw food world were rather shocked to learn of her bout with breast cancer — especially as there are so many documented cases of people turning to raw foods to cure cancer! We’ve attempted to contact Bif a number of times, as we’d love a chance to interview her about this. But, like Jason Mraz, she’s particularly tough to personally connect with.

Every raw foodie knows David Wolfe… But did you know he’s a musician, too? From the Healing Waters Band site: “Their sound is one best described as upbeat, positive, humorous and groovy. All six members eat a diet consisting solely of raw, organic fruits and vegetables 24/7. While touring the U.S. and Canada they travel in a bus fueled entirely with cooking grease from fast-food restaurants.”

Next up is Elijah and the Band of Light. Wendi first heard and met with this band while at the Raw Spirit Festival in Sedona in 2008. She brought back their CD and, based on the number of times she’s played it since, it’s fair to say that this is among her favorite bands of all time! In addition to the band’s web site linked to at left, they also have a community site, here, for friends and fans.

Okay, on to the Luminaries. We were largely unfamiliar with them, but it looks like they performed at the last Raw Spirit Festival in Santa Barbara. From their site: “A dynamic group of gifted artists who know that they are here to affect great positive change on this planet… spearheading the luminous movement – exposing truth through the vehicle of music, conscious hip-hop, and love vibrations. … Luminaries, united by their vision for peace, being the change, being the message, being receptive, being connected – and emanating this radiant glow – each individually – and exponentially amplified as a collective…”

Cipes and the People.  From their site: ”Cipes And The People are an electrifying 21st Century conscious, roots-rock band that fully captures the power and spirit of oneness in a joyful celebration of love and music. ‘Music is the most powerful vibration on the planet,’ says Cipes, the group’s charismatic singer and songwriter. ‘We’re all sound vibration. Music is in movies, television shows. It’s everywhere. So ultimately, it’s the vibration that transcends all things. Would you like to hear some?’ You do, because Cipes And The People create music with the intention of fusing knowledge, wisdom and awareness with the very clear vision that we are all brothers and sisters capable of living in harmony with each other and the planet.”

Shimshai.  From his site: “Whether singing the ancient Sanskrit mantras of India, the traditional folklore songs of South America, or performing his original works of divine inspiration, Shimshai’s music invokes a sentiment of ancestral devotion and a dedication to higher consciousness. A self-proclaimed seeker of truth, described by many as possessing the voice of an angel, Shimshai is gifted with the innate ability to deliver his message flawlessly in several languages; most profoundly the universal language of Love and Oneness.”

Djin Aquarian. Wow, this guy was a bit tough to track down, but we found him! According to the site, this band features “the organic fluctuations of sonic chemistry. Wildly primal. Jazzy. Blues-y. Electrical. Contagious. Always inspired. This music is so clearly channeled from the Divine. Unpracticed, unpretentious, yet still wickedly rockable!Fire. Water. Air. Ether. Earth. This music combines every element, taking you on an energetic cosmic carpet ride.” We haven’t heard them yet, but will take a listen soon!

Jimmy Braskett. This link goes to his MySpace page, where he’s self-described as a folk-rock, acoustic, ambient artist. One of the great things about musicians with MySpace pages is the direct access to their music. I’m currently listening to his “Silencing the Stones” as I write this. Great stuff, Jimmy!

Peter Edwards.  Peter describes his piano sound as “healing & easy listening / acoustic / ambient.”  He’s another one with a MySpace page, so you can hear samples directly. Quite beautiful music, Peter! Very relaxing and peaceful. From his page: “Peter Edwards, British-born pianist and multi-keyboardist, is one of the early innovators of new age piano and contemporary instrumental soundscapes. His music sings of the paradise found in our oneness with the beauties of nature, and helps to awaken the ’secret oasis’ within each of our hearts.” Peter also runs a raw food directory site called Raw Food Planet.

Tania Elizabeth from The Duhks. Wow, the Duhks have a pretty neat web site. Check it out sometime! I hadn’t heard of them, but came across this article on Tania’s raw life on the road with the band. I was listening to one of their videos and trying to identify the genre for you, but had some trouble as it’s really a mixture of styles. So, I re-Googled them and found their Wiki page, which said, “The five members play a blend of Canadian soul, gospel, North American folk, Brazilian samba, old time country string band, zydeco, and Irish dance music.” Yep, that sums up the sound rather well! I don’t believe the whole band is raw, but it looks like Tania is giving it a serious go.

Angelika.  From her site: “Angelika’s music appeals to all paths, anyone who longs for the Freedom and Beauty of the Divine and the forgotten music of their own soul. Angelika’s main intention is to promote Oneness, Peace, Healing and Good Will amongst all people everywhere through inspiration and she sees music as a great tool for that. The vibration of deep peace and joy in this music can cut through the constructs of the mind to the essence of our being very quickly by flowing softly into the heart without effort. Angelika sings ancient Sanskrit healing chants, mantras, prayers in different languages and her own original songs in English, German and Sanskrit, sharing love, celebration, comfort and wisdom.” Her site includes some song samples, as well as a page devoted to raw foods. (She does some teaching on raw foods as well!).

Carlos Rull. Our friend Carlos is a professional pianist and drummer from Southern CA. Known as RandomGuru on Twitter and elsewhere online, he often also spends time online documenting his personal spiritual journey. Fom his site: “Carlos Rull is an award-winning drummer and pianist currently performing with several musical projects in the San Diego area, and is often called on to do last minute substitution-work for various musical groups. Carlos has and continues to perform with the legendary experimental rock artist Gary Wilson (of You Think You Really Know Me fame), both with his Gary Wilson and the Blind Dates group, and with Singer Donnie Finnell. In addition, Carlos also performs consistently with flamenco/jazz/fusion group Flamenco Nova, and he also does corporate and private events with Big Daddy Orchestra, led by singer/guitarist and bandleader Barry Cohen.”

How could we cover raw musicians here without giving a shout-out to our good friend Jer, aka Alien Implant?! Jer’s an aficionado of industrial rock. We’ve had many wonderful conversations about his personal influences, composition style, and of course his extensive collection of virtual synthesizers. If you visit his MySpace page linked to at left, you can hear his tune Coma, which has received more than 100,000 plays!

According to a page on David Wolfe’s web site, other famous musicians who have at least shown “an interest” in raw foods include Anthony Keedis (from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), Barbara Streisand, Brian Adams, Jewel, K.D. Lang, Lou Reed, Seal, The Grateful Dead, David Bowie, Moby, Prince, Sting, Nina. The extent of these musicians’ interest or involvement in raw is unknown (although Wolfe says he’s heard that David Bowie and his wife have a live-in raw chef).

*     *     *

Wait!! I know more, I know more!! [Wendi here, popping by to add a few before the post goes live... I don't know how to do that fancy thing with the pics/links on the left and the text on the right, though. Maybe Jim can come back when he has some extra time at the office to fix this up a bit. ;-) ]

  • Jim Dee (Rawdiant on Twitter). Yep, Pure Jeevan’s very own Jim Dee — the one who wrote this article and didn’t even bother mentioning himself — composes piano music (mostly modern ragtime songs), and you can check out his site here.

There are more, too! The following raw foodies are also musically talented:

AND!! There’s someone just about all of you know who’s also a musician (little known fact) and even has a CD out! I’m not going to mention who he is, yet. I just had an idea and I need to run it past him, first. If he’s okay with it…I’ll post something exciting for all of you next Friday. *big grin*

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions to us earlier this week for this list!  So, who else should be included here?  Have we left off any raw foodist musicians you know of?  If so, please let us know in the comments section!

New Dishes: Making it Fun!

Fun-Filled Friday, Pure Jeevan Talks View Comments

Here at Pure Jeevan we are preparing for our cross country tour to educate others about raw foods. This means we are paring down on a lot of things, donating a lot, selling some things, and pretty much not buying anything unless it’s absolutely necessary. That’s what we’ve been doing for almost two years now (we’re waiting for the house to sell). Recently, however, I decided it was time to spend a little bit of money even if it wasn’t absolutely necessary.

What did we buy? Dishes! Seems a bit strange to finally spend some money on something unnecessary and have it be dishes, right? Well, I had a few reasons for this purchase. The first is that when we are living in the RV, the space is going to be minimal. There won’t be a lot of room for dishes, let alone much of anything else. Since there’s not a lot of space to have dishes drying, we’ll need to be washing, drying, and putting away immediately after use. That may not sound like a big deal, but when someone in the family decides to eat a few different things and leave the dirty dishes in the tiny RV sink, on the small counter, or somewhere else, it’s going to really seem like a bigger mess than it is. So, to remedy this I thought it would be good for each of us to have our own dishes. That way we have a sense of responsibility for our own particular dishes–we know they are ours and we are responsible for taking care of them.

The second reason I decided to get the dishes is because here at the house someone (not saying names ;-) ) has been eating meals, snacking throughout the day, and using dishes up faster than I can keep up with them. So, we’re beginning our RV routine right here, now, in our home. We eat on our special dishes, we wash them, and then put them away. This has already cut down on the amount of dishes so much that it’s a joy to wash the few that are in the sink!

The final reason for the new dishes is because they are fun! It’s fun to see the different colors, styles, and sizes. On top of that, simple meals served on colorful dishes makes the meal even more enjoyable. While we were shopping for the dishes, Jim had picked out a set that was very earthy looking. I liked it. When he saw the colors that KDcat had chosen, however, he said that it looked like she’d be having a party every time she ate and he wanted something more fun, too. So he found a set of dishes that seem to shout “party” every time he eats, now!

We don’t have this problem, but if someone in your home (particularly children) aren’t interested in eating healthy foods, maybe allowing them to select some fun dishes for themselves will make meal times more enjoyable? We went to a discount store and nothing we purchased cost over $3 each. If we didn’t find anything there, we planned on checking out the second hand stores to put together our unique dish sets. This doesn’t have to be an expensive purchase. We did it all for between $20-$30.
